May 17th, 2008 GRNY APAK Worlds of Wonder Aaron and Ayumi Piland Tompkins Square Park Dance Parade Typing Subway Ride Home ” ASUPREMENEWYORKTHING

Alright, I thought this video was amusing. Let me see here, it’s a video of the art show at Giant Robot New York. APAK flew from Oregon to be at the show and oh boy it was wonderful. You get a nice 360 view of the gallery, some detailed up-close shots of some of the pieces, a few words from Aaron Piland (half of APAK), some footage of Ayumi (the other half of APAK), a glimpse of the Dance Parade that was going on near the gallery at Tompkins Square Park, Cheryl typing, Christina and about a minute and a half of my subway ride home at around 4 AM without any lights. This video would be amusing if watched under the influence (i.e. alcohol, drugs, etc.).

This is an animated gif of Cheryl from GRNY, drinking. She drinks (booze) every 4 seconds, like the real Cheryl -sigh.

Evah Fan & Brendan Monroe in New York for Bed and Breakfast and Austin English’s Windy Corner 2 Release, June 6, 2008 ” ASUPREMENEWYORKTHING

Wow, what an interesting day. So…Evah Fan and Brendan Monroe are in New York for their “Bed and Breakfast’ show @ Little Cakes Gallery (from June 6th thru the 29th, 2008). Their pieces are consistent with their styles: Evah with her small, often times humorous paintings and sculptures and Brendan continuing to feed his penchant for the earth-y. Hmm…earth-y… that’s accurate right? I mean, he paints a lot of soil and earth texture so I don’t know how else to describe that. The works are neither about beds nor breakfast but rather what you do after, GARDENING –not me though, I don’t garden, but maybe you (yes, you, I see you, I’m looking at you right now). The show includes individual works as well as collaborations, which Brendan explained isn’t something they do very often. As artists, they’re definitely extremely nice with their sassy plastic rimmed glasses and their friendly positive-attitudes, a result of living in the year-round sunny California. But watch out! They both curse like sailors at a cursing contest and they’re both tied cause they both curse so much. Okay, just kidding –but not really. So if you see them, say hello!

You should definitely visit Little Cakes Gallery and steal their idea of converting your apartment into a gallery. I found that to be interesting. On the one hand you’ve got small gallery space and on the other you’re standing in Hana and Dave’s apartment, probably their living room. Go, now.

Austin English just released his 2nd issue of Windy Corner magazine @ Desert Island comic book store, in the BK (that’s Brooklyn). This is his heart and guts spilled out onto paper form so pick it up now. He recently got himself a pair of aviator glasses and he’s now a circa 1980s pornstar –less the body hair. If you see him, slap him some five. He’s from California too but he’s more a New York war veteran after having gone through the drudgery and complacency of urban ennui. Ooh, I just talked fancy.

Little Cakes Little Gallery presents
“Bed and Breakfast” – a show inspired by home gardening

This show has been brewing for a few years now and we are very happy to have it come to fruition, just as all the farmers markets and community gardens are starting to hit their stride here in New York. We are also proud to be collaborating with Brendan and Evah on such a hot topic which is incredibly close to our own hearts, gardening and growing your own food.

In this show, Evah Fan and Brendan Monroe get inspiration from the primary meaning of gardening to their own individual definitions of it being nurturing and having a sense of responsibility. To them, and to many of us who have learned to enjoy getting dirt under our finger nails, gardening is very “do-it-yourself” in the same way punk rock is/was to us; making your own zines, putting out your own music, making your own food! In this show, they have chosen to use their artwork to enrich the “soil” of our lives.

The show’s installation will include paintings, sculptural works, and collaborative pieces. Brendan will focus on the micro worlds within the botanic landscape. He takes reference from science and interprets his fascination with it to create something that draws our attention to the multitude of possibilities that are happening just below the focus of our eyes. Evah will portray gardening with her quirky point of view. She is interested in creating deceptively simple narratives with small doses of ambiguity and naïve humor.

The artist couple live, work, and garden in Berkeley, California. They both have recently had solo shows at Richard Heller Gallery in Los Angeles. They are parents to Jalapeño, a cat with lots of spunk!

Seriously, what would GOD look like? ” ASUPREMENEWYORKTHING

Above: Your typical rendtion of GOD (jah-odd) by Michaelangelo.

I’m not a religious person at all. With that established, I’d like to talk to you about god and how he’d look like if he was real. It’s interesting because he’s typically portrayed in American/Western media as this old white guy with a long beard. I’m not sure where that’s originated from but I suppose, maybe, it may have something to do with the Renaissance artists (which includes Michaelangelo, the Ninja Turtle) who frescoed the Sistine Chapel.

Above: Gasoline is God’s moisturizer.

Who cares – it’s really pointless to dicuss how he SHOULD look like when he doesn’t even exist, right? okay. It’s not supposed to be a serious topic. If god had a physical form, it’d be cool if he was a giant. I mean, MAYBE he can be just a giant hand. The point is, god, if he was almighty and powerful, then let us see it. I say, come and stomp on some people.

Above: Galactus, he knows what he’s doing, being so sexy and all like, “I’m going to destroy you.”

I’ve watched those Godzilla movies. Did those films ever say that he was a god or a titan or anything? I mean, despite those films never being too realistic, the concept is interesting, that there are beings so grand in size that humans run in fear of it. I can recall a few other portrayels: Morgan Freeman (Bruce Almighty), Alanis Morissette (Dogma), George Burns (Oh, God!). Let me just quickly go through the problems with each of those. If Morgan Freeman was god, white people would question whether he’s god cause he deserves it or cause of affirmative action. If Alanis was god – actually, I don’t really know. I just kinda wanted to make that black joke. And, George Burns? He’s dead, who cares.

Above: I have black friends, I can make black jokes.

Anywho, I just made this entry to post pictures of Godzilla. Hopefully my next entry will be something of more substance. Oh, I guess if you want to feel like you’ve learned something or got something out of this then go ahead and ponder how god, if he exists, does bad things to good people.

Above: “If there is one thing Godzilla despises, it is a rainbow.”

Above: Godzilla is getting beat up. He’s all cut up and shit.

First,

Go to my Yahoo Answers Question!

I’ve noted many-a-times, on my blog, how much I enjoy Yahoo Answers! For those of you new to my site (Thanks for visiting), Yahoo Answers is essentially a social site that allows members to ask and answer questions to gain points in some arbitrary point system. These points you get basically shows you how much time you’ve wasted. Anyway instead of answering questions as I always do, this time I’m ASKING a question. More on this later!

Review for Half Nelson and Ghost Rider! ” ASUPREMENEWYORKTHING

Above: “So, you watch the Cosby show?”

Half Nelson with Ryan Gosling was a pretty good movie because it’s knitty-gritty and that’s what’s hot right now. Similar to how Syriana is kind of a knitty-gritty movie or how Traffic was kind of knitty-gritty, the natural look of the camera work – you know what I’m talking about – how it’s never still because it’s always being held by a guy and never on a stand seems to be all the hype. Other than the camera work, the story is worth a watch and the acting is good enough to make us believe. It’s a drama so there’s nothing sexy or action packed about it. If you’re planning on watching it then slow your pace down and want to be emotionally involved to reap its benefits.

What you’ve got here is this white guy who’s somewhat relate-able, the way he’s innocently idealistic about the world. He teaches at a public school with a bunch of black and hispanic kids, studied dialectic – or atleast that’s what he teaches his students about, concepts and ideas about change rather than just have them memorize facts and dates about the Civil Rights movement (he teaches history) – and, most importantly, because this is what get’s you, he’s fallen like an angel in darkness – ADDICTED TO CRACK, baby.

THIS CRACKA is a CRACKHEAD. He doesn’t see his problem as a problem and he teaches during the day. There are scenes in the movie film (Yashamesh!) where he’s rambling and I couldn’t distinguish whether he was actually teaching or on a cracka-head crack high.

Scenes of his life are contrasted/interwined with intermittent scenes of Drey’s life, played by Shareeka Epps – wonderful actress because she’s pretty gangsta, pretty street, or so she appears. She’s a student in his class and a player on the basketball team our crackhead teacher coaches and during these important years of her life she deals with a missing father, a brother in jail and a mother who’s trying to support them but never has any time because she’s always working (it’s heartbreaking). There are some real monumental scenes in the movie the different premises build up to. It’s not a movie you want to watch if you’re feeling down but it’s really good if you are. Ghostrider was a piece of shit.

Above: Somebody call the Ghostbusters.

Paka Paka Paka Posey in ‘Broken English’! ” ASUPREMENEWYORKTHING

Three Words – 1.) CHICK 3.) FLICK

I would have liked this movie more if I was a girl. I’m not and it was okay, I didn’t think it was too bad. It’s about Parker Posey who has man troubles and then meets some French guy and then kaboom a lot of estrogen induced stuff happens, she cries, she goes to France, it’s a mess.

Last night, I saw Death Proof again. It was awesome. I watched it, I deleted it. My getting-rid-of-all-my-stuff mental disease has manifested itself towards everything. After I watched Death Proof, I deleted it. I swear, this blog is on the edge of getting deleted.

Alrighty…, so based on what I just said about it, you have no idea whether this is a good movie or not, right? Well, you should go watch it and then within the 1st 10 minutes, decide if you want to sit through it. I can’t tell you what you like or not. It’s a very New York film as it takes place in New York and it doesn’t try to make it pretty or more romantic than it is.

Go download it.

So… I am and was sitting in front of a large mirror and looking at myself w/ my pants & shirt tightly wrapped around my body. It is unfortunate what has happened. I have gained some weight. This is my blog, I will write and wander into any random thought I want.

This is like the End Game of blogging except I’m no Sam Beckett.
ADD: You know, I just reread what I wrote. Actually this is a GREAT review of Broken English. This is EXACTLY how I felt watching it. Insane and lost. Awesome.

ADD: I didn’t actually finish watching the damn thing when I wrote the above. All of a sudden the movie becomes Lost in Translation w/ Parker Posey doing the Scarlett Johansson character and instead of Japan, it’s France. And then it gets funny.

ADD: The French scenery is beautiful.

ADD:

ADD: The ending is very romantic and unrealistic.

ADD: I just deleted it.

Triple Five Soul Mike Giant Party 4.5.07 (pictures included) ” ASUPREMENEWYORKTHING

Bam! Here you go. Another Party Event shindig-type deal that I went to. A friend let me know of it but I didn’t even know what this was about. I knew it had something to do with Mike Giant’s work so I thought that going to this thing would be interesting. Essentially he did some art on the walls of the store so lets par-tay over here, par-tay over there (ala Cora Daniels).

(On a side note: Get this, so I’ve been posting my coverage of these events and the last few (ie Tiger Translate and the Reed Space one) were okay but I made the mistake of badmouthing some of the events that I went to, such as Showroom Showdown and I know they saw it so I don’t know if I’m still on the mailing list anymore!)

Anyway, this thing was interesting. I got to meet Mike Giant but it was weird to stand around with the music amidst the hangers (because it’s a retail store that usually sell their sweatshirts and coats). The hangers were attached to the ceiling and they couldn’t do anything about it. Some people just started using it for their own coats (you’ll see, scroll down).

See, see, see what I’m talking about!? Hangers! Whatever. Oh, by the way, here’s a secret, if you’ve got an ASIAN fetish, you should probably attend these things because a lot of Asian people (girls) like to attend downtown deals. That may sound inappropriate but let it sink in for a while and once you get what I’m saying, you’ll have a huge grin on your face (you know what I’m talking about, skinny white people guys, black guys…eh? eh? okay, good, you got it.)

This is artsy, right? I’ll call it “SHOES’

There you go, man of the hour, Mike Giant.

More hangers.

He works at the Bronx Zoo. No, I’m not guessing, he told me. Seriously!? no, I’m lying.

I do not like those stupid big old lady glasses that all these skinny broads are sporting. It is NOT hot.

This one is called “FREE SMART WATER’
